When we think of professional development we often think of formal training such as conferences or workshops. Maybe you take a course and end up with a certificate of knowledge you have obtained. But what if we had a great explanation for professional development?

Here you can join a technology organization and help change the systems or policies around you. Or you can create a blog, podcast, or video series of other people in the field. By sharing your expertise you become more visible in your art and improve it for the better.

Sometimes professional advancement is simply a matter of self-care. When you go for a walk or yoga your mind makes connections between seemingly incompatible ideas. When you have creative efforts outside of your work you end up building new skills that you can use in your work.

Ultimately, professional development is personal and deeply stupid. There is no one way to do it. You can own this process by deliberately and self-directed.
